Russ & Daughters is open today! Fourth generation owners, Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper, opened the shop at 9:00 a.m. today, at 179 East Houston Street, on the Lower East Side.
We have fresh bagels, hand-sliced lox, babka, hot coffee, cold water, and space for great conversation, of course. We wish all the best to you and yours and we look forward to seeing you in the shop soon.
Since our power is out, and we’re running on a generator, we have no phone service and limited e-mail access at this time. But we certainly want to hear from you. For the latest updates, please follow us on Tumblr (russanddaughters.tumblr.com), Twitter (twitter.com/LoxPopuli), and Instagram (username: @RussAndDaughters).

Just down the street from my block…

Lights out over the Northeast, as captured by NASA’s Suomi NPP on October 21 and November 1, before and after Hurricane Sandy.
Funding for NASA’s weather and climate satellites is faltering. if we don’t support strong science funding, we won’t have the tools to predict the next disaster. We’ll only have the tools to measure the damage.

Reposted from the @newyorkermag’s Instagram feed, which is using iPhone photographers like @ruddyroye and @BenLowy to cover the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy on the ground. As an editor, from an almost-defunct print publication (Newsweek) now at a new media company (Tumblr), it’s encouraging to see legacy brands like the New Yorker — and TIME, which is running one of Lowy’s iphone images of Sandy on its cover this week — embracing new journalistic models.
UPDATE: Lowy will be documenting the recovery efforts for Tumblr over the coming week. Tune into Storyboard for more.

Threw this chart together while literally in a state of emergency.
What’s most telling is that the number of natural disasters since 1996 costing $1 BILLION or more (90 events) nearly doubled compared with the previous 15-year period (46 disasters). As Eric Dooley, senior vice president of the Environmental Defense Fund describes it, “We can’t say that steroids caused any one home run by Barry Bonds, but steroids sure helped him hit more and hit them farther. Now we have weather on steroids.”
Oh, and if you haven’t read Paul Barrett’s excellent story and seen Richard’s excellent cover, you should.
Stay high. Stay dry.
